About Us

Welcome to Karen Elephant Home, a friendly sanctuary nestled south of Chiang Mai. Owned by Mr. Kriengkrai and his warm-hearted family, this century-old Karen Settlement has been a safe haven for rescued elephants since 2016.

With their deep-rooted knowledge and love for these majestic creatures, the Karen family offers visitors a truly unique and insightful experience into the world of elephants and Karen culture.

Upon arrival, guests have the opportunity to prepare food and feed the elephants, creating a bond built on trust. Embarking on a walk along scenic hillside trails, you'll witness elephants foraging and playing in their natural habitat, amidst terraced rice paddies, tall grasses, orchards, and lush forests. The highlight awaits as you watch these gentle giants bathe in the crystal-clear stream that gracefully winds through the sanctuary. Additionally, during the rainy season, guests have the chance to contribute to reforestation efforts by planting saplings and learn about traditional rice cultivation.

Dodo & Kham Meun

Let me tell you about two special elephant brothers named Dodo and Kham Meun!

These friendly siblings, along with their loving mother named Mae Thor Khor, found refuge at the Karen Elephant Home in 2016. Thankfully, they were rescued from a life of elephant riding and performing, and now they get to enjoy a much better life in the beautiful embrace of nature. Sadly, their dear mother passed away in 2018 when she was in her late 70’s. The sanctuary has become her final resting place, a testament to the love she shared with her elephant family.

Kham Meun, born in 1997, and his younger brother Dodo, born in 2001, have a strong and close bond. They can often be spotted displaying their affection for one another. These sweet bull elephants spend their days exploring the sanctuary together, foraging for food on the lush hillside, indulging in rejuvenating mud baths, and delighting in tree-scratching sessions. They also enjoy relaxing by the soothing stream and quenching their thirst.

Dodo and Kham Meun truly embody the essence of brotherly love and are living proof of the beauty and resilience of elephants.

What's In A Name?

In the Karen Village, the process of selecting names for elephants is a fascinating tradition. With an "Elephant Expert" overseeing the procedure, names are chosen in a unique way. A piece of sugar cane is attached to each potential name, and it becomes the method for determining an elephant's new identity.

As the elephants meander amidst the options, their curiosity leads them toward a certain sugar cane. The one they choose effectively becomes their name. It's a whimsical way to let the elephants play an active role in the naming process and connect with their own special title.

One memorable occasion featured Kham Meun. During this event, the elephant wandered towards a specific sugar cane, indicating the name he would carry from then on. It was a special moment of bonding between human and elephant, as a new identity was sealed.

In another instance, an elephant named Dodo received a rather comical name. A funny American name was bestowed upon this gentle giant, adding a playful touch to the collection of elephant names in the village.

Our Objectives

We understand the importance of treating these magnificent creatures with kindness and respect. At Karen Elephant Home we offer a compassionate alternative to elephant riding and shows.

We strive to create an environment that promotes the elephants well-being and helps them embrace a happier, more peaceful existence, by  providing a place of trust, where elephants can heal and lose their fear.

We believe that freedom and connection with their fellow elephants are vital for their emotional and mental health. At Karen Elephant Home we allow our elephants to roam, socialize, play, and recover their natural instincts.

Lastly, we ensure that the elephants in our care are well fed and receive the best possible care. We prioritize their physical health to ensure they thrive in their sanctuary.

Together, with your support, we can continue to achieve these objectives and contribute to a brighter future for these incredible creatures.
